利き手
利き手ではない方の手を使っていろいろなことをすると、脳の活性化につながるということを知人から聞きました。
私は右利きですが、左で画数の多い漢字を書いていると、夫が次のように言いました。

（利き手ではない手で書いているの？）
dominant hand が 「利き手」 で、利き手ではない方は non-dominant hand です。
生物学上の dominant の定義は次の通りです。
being the one of a pair of bodily structures that is the more effective or predominant* in action
（身体構造の対になっているうちの一つで、活動においてより効果的で優勢な方）
次のような定義も載っています。
more important, strong, or noticeable than anything else of the same type
（同じ種類の他のものよりも重要で、強く、目立つ）
「支配的な、有力な、優勢な、主要な」 のような訳が載っていて、次のようにも使えます。
English is the dominant language on the Internet.
（インターネット上では英語が支配的である。）
For years the Democrats were the dominant party in Congress.
（何年も民主党が議会において支配力を持つ政党だった。）
* predominant は dominant と、ほぼ同じ意味で使われることがありますが、下記のように 「主な、一般的な」 という意味で使われることもあります。
Blue is the predominant color in his paintings.
（青が彼の絵の主な色調だ。）
non-dominant hand をたまには使って、衰えてきている脳に刺激を与えるのも悪くないなあと思いました。。
